He’ll be sharing his insights and impressions from his internship with the Retail team at EGG Digital in the role of a Data Scientist. Let’s dive in!
Ascend Team: Hello there! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Jark: Hi everyone, I’m Seubsan, or just Jark for short. Currently, I’m a fourth-year Statistics student at Chulalongkorn University. I had the fantastic opportunity to intern with Ascend Group as a Data Scientist within the Retail team at EGG Digital. My main tasks included working on price elasticity and optimization for Lotus’s products and brainstorming business ideas for company partners and the Business Analytic Consultant team.
Ascend Team: What were you looking forward to or expecting to gain from this internship?
Jark: My main expectation was to gain real-world experience in data science. I hoped to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve learned in university to real work, including analyzing large datasets, managing big data, and learning how to solve business problems using statistics and data models. I also looked forward to working closely with the data team — data scientists, data analysts, and data engineers — to deeply understand the workflow in this field. Ultimately, I wanted to work in an environment that fosters growth, with opportunities for learning from experienced colleagues and utilizing cutting-edge technologies.
Ascend Team: What was the main reason you chose to intern with Ascend Group?
Jark: I chose to intern here because of EGG Digital’s reputation as a leader in providing data-driven business consulting services. I saw the opportunity to work with large datasets and explore various digital data services offered by the company. Additionally, the work environment played a significant role in my decision. A conducive workplace enhances learning and productivity, and I believed Ascend Group and EGG Digital could offer me just that.
Ascend Team: What was the most challenging project you worked on during your internship?
Jark: The most challenging project was developing a price elasticity and optimization model for Lotus’s products. Understanding the factors influencing product pricing, sometimes not directly available in the data, and ensuring the model’s accuracy posed significant challenges. We had to delve into economics, read research papers, and articles on business to find new ways to incorporate statistical methods and data science techniques into our analysis. The guidance from experienced colleagues and exposure to new business knowledge were crucial in tackling this project and developing skills applicable to future tasks.
Ascend Team: What impressed you the most during your internship at Ascend Group?
Jark: What impressed me the most was how closely my experience aligned with my expectations. I gained hands-on experience, worked with real business data, and had the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills to create value for the company. The collaborative nature of the workplace, where everyone contributes to project success, was remarkable. I also appreciated the modern work environment, which allowed for autonomy in managing time and tasks. But above all, it was the camaraderie among fellow interns and the genuine care and support from team members that left the greatest impression on me. Ascend Team: Do you have any words of advice for your fellow interns at Ascend or for those interested in interning at Ascend in the future?
Jark: Absolutely! Firstly, it’s crucial to have clear goals for your internship so that you can figure out what you want to gain from the experience. Whether it’s learning something beyond what you can find within university walls or acquiring knowledge you can apply in the future.
Secondly, don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re unsure. Internships are about gaining experience and learning, and every question helps expand your understanding. So, it’s totally okay to ask about things you don’t know or need clarification on. I believe that everyone here is more than happy to answer our questions. Personally, in the early stages of my internship, I relied heavily on asking questions to understand data structures and the features of various datasets. The answers I received helped me see the bigger picture, made my work easier, and improved my data analysis skills rapidly.
Another important aspect is building connections, both with fellow interns and with the senior members of the team. This is a golden opportunity to access experts in the field, and in the future, we can leverage these connections to exchange knowledge or seek advice. Lastly, I’d like to emphasize the importance of discovering your strengths and what you enjoy doing in your work. The advantage here is that the internship experience closely mirrors real work, helping us better understand ourselves and whether this career path is right for us. It’s not just about fulfilling internship duties; it’s about making the most of it. Internships help us learn, grow, and find what’s right for us.
